The morning after a WinStar night

Nobody plans breakfast on a casino weekend. It just arrives, usually later than intended, with eight people at various stages of awake and at least two who need coffee before they can speak. This is the short, honest guide to that morning.

Le Paris Bakery & Café: the good one on the property

Le Paris is WinStar's café — fresh pastries, breakfast sandwiches, proper coffee, in a room styled after a Parisian café. It's genuinely good, it's the one place on the property that's at its best at 8 a.m., and it's priced like a café. If you're going to eat one breakfast at the casino, make it this one.

The catch is the same as everything at a casino: you have to get dressed, walk through the gaming floor, and stand in a line with everyone else who had the same idea.

The better option isn't a restaurant

The best breakfast near WinStar is the one you don't get dressed for. Every one of our homes has a kitchen that's actually a kitchen — full-size fridge, stove and oven, toaster, and the two things that matter most at 8 a.m.: a drip coffee maker and a Keurig. That's not redundancy. The first person up wants a pot; the fourth person up wants one cup, fast, without touching anyone else's pot. Both are covered.

Eggs, bacon, whatever you picked up on the way in. Eight people, one kitchen, pyjamas allowed, nobody standing in a casino line. It's the part of the weekend people mention in reviews.

The houses where breakfast is the point

Girl's Night Out has the kitchen people photograph — blush-pink cabinetry, a white marble waterfall island, gold-accent lighting. Mimosas at that island is a specific and good way to start a Saturday. Group Ready has the kitchen that opens onto the living room, so whoever's cooking is still in the conversation, plus a dining table and island seating for all eight.

Hunter's Lodge has the long farmhouse table — the slow, everyone-together, second-pot-of-coffee breakfast.

Coffee beyond the casino

If you do want to go out for it, Gainesville, TX is a short drive south across the river and has proper coffee options. We've written a day guide to downtown Gainesville that covers it. Thackerville itself is small; the casino and the house are the two real options.

After breakfast

Every one of our homes is two to four minutes from WinStar, most under a mile, so a slow morning at the house doesn't cost you the day. Firepit in the backyard for the coffee-outside crowd. Door-code check-in, free parking, and when you check out there's no front desk to queue at either.
